I am trying to utilize texting (with audible commands) while driving my 2018 G80. I downloaded Android Auto to my phone and when I start up my G80 I see the Android icon when I press 'Info' on my car. But the icon is not lit and there seems to be no connection from the G80 point of view.

Has anyone had difficulty in this area?

It may be a compatibility issue with your device. What kind of phone do you have? If you head to this site you can confirm whether or not your phone is supported.

Starting with the easiest thing we can do, updating the firmware on your phone would be a good start. When last have you updated it?

I think you need Google Assistant or Google Now app, maybe? I have a Google Pixel 2 Xl phone, which has the Google Assistant built in the phone, so as soon as I got my bluetooth working, the assistant started working with my Android Auto.
